About Daniel and the Glyn Cook Memorial Scholarship

What is Daniel?
Daniel is Florida’s oldest child serving agency, this year celebrating 125 years of serving the needs of abused, neglected and abandoned kids.

What does Daniel do?
Daniel Memorial was established in 1884 as the Orphanage and Home for the Friendless with the mission to “receive into a suitable home to support and provide for all who shall come under the provisions of the constitution as far as our means and facilities will enable us.” In the 125 years that have followed, the needs have changed as society and the family structures have changed, however, Daniel Memorial continues to support and provide for children.

Where does the name come from?
In 1891, the orphanage was renamed for Col. James Jaquelin Daniel, an early philanthropist and city leader in Jacksonville. Instead of using money to build a statue to Col. Daniel, his widow donated the money to the orphanage, which has created a lasting memorial to Col. Daniel.

What is the Glyn Cook Memorial Scholarship?
The Scholarship was established in 2008 with the mission to establish a lasting legacy for long time and influential board member Glyn Cook. To that end, the Glyn Cook Memorial Scholarship will provide financial assistance to qualified Daniel kids seeking to further their education at an accredited university, college, or trade school.

Who can earn the scholarship?
Kids who have graduated high school after being in the programs at Daniel, and who have met requirements for grades, community service and leadership will be considered.
